“Cyborgization”
is a relatively modern word, it is how we see and interpret ourselves, others
and societies in terms of the definition given to the word Cyborg. A cyborg is
one who seeks to enhance his or her abilities by prosthetics (limbs etc.)
and/or implants (e.g. pacemaker and cochlear); it is the joining/fusing
together of the organic system with the inorganic/mechanical (clonk), the
technological. Indeed, in our society today, we are very much cyborgs on a
sliding scale – from the ubiquitous spectacles to organ and joint replacements
to electronic implants (Reading University - Implanted Chip). Please refer to figure1.
No articles or studies (on Cyborgs) would be complete without reference to the main personalities who have made it all possible; I will explain Cyborg by first giving a synopsis of these personalities: Manfred Clynes the originator of the term Cyborg (along with is colleague Nathan Kline), and Norbert Wiener, whose research and work and popular use of the word Cybernetics, which encapsulated his work, Clynes drew on.
